A European retail conglomerate is testing a surveillance system that can trace both shipping units and individual items. Metro Group, which includes supermarkets, electronics stores, home improvement centers and other retail outlets in 28 countries, is experimenting with a system that can read standard frequencies for both Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The dual-frequency system, from Checkpoint Systems Inc., will be tested as part of the Metro Group's Future Store Initiative, a program that tests innovations in retail technology.
