[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Caption: SURVEILLANCE UPPED: U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft (l), who testified March 4 before the Senate Judiciary Committee with Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge and FBI Director Robert Mueller (speaking), said he has authorized more than 170 secret electronic surveillance steps and physical searches of suspected terrorists since the September 11 attacks. That is more than triple the 47 emergency searches authorized by other attorneys general in the last 20 years.
